Building women’s confidence for leadership
What is self-confidence?
Last year an organisation asked me to run a workshop that would help its aspiring women’s leadership group to better understand how they could actively build their self-confidence for future roles. So what is self-confidence and how do we build it?
Self-confidence is about how we see ourselves, and our belief in our ability to get things done. It is also about how we perceive our limitations. A confident person needs to be able to balance their belief in their abilities realistically against their gaps.
To boost confidence we need to maximise our faith in our strengths while simultaneously managing thoughts about our inadequacies. Success comes from building self-awareness to maintain focus on a positive self-image. Also critical are learning specific strategies that diminish limiting beliefs and negative self talk that so often hold people back.
